Village of Govedartsi

- history

The Rila Monastery

"Every area around Govedartsi carries the memory of bygone times, whispers old legends and traditions. Thracians and Slavs have left their traces in these places, the warriors of Tsar Ivan Shishman and Samuil have passed through, and Paisius and his followers have spread the Bulgarian word. The nearby Rila Monastery, an unquenchable hearth of Bulgarianness in the dark ages of the yoke, was a support for the spirits. The bands of Malyo, Gyula, and Chakar the Voivode roamed through Rila and the people of Iskroveti sang songs about them..."
